Just take Precaution

"AMS Preventing High Altitude Illness (HAI), including Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)"

is crucial when traveling to high-altitude locations like Ladakh. The goal is to give your body time to acclimatize to the lower oxygen levels at these elevations

When you arrive in LADAKH, spend 24 hours at an intermediate altitude (such as Leh) to allow your body to adjust before going higher.
• Drink plenty of water: Staying well-hydrated is crucial in preventing altitude sickness. At high altitudes, your body loses moisture more quickly, and dehydration can worsen symptoms of AMS.
• Avoid alcohol and caffeine: Both alcohol and caffeine can lead to dehydration, so it's best to limit or avoid them during your time at altitude.
• Aim for at least 3-4 liters (0.8-1 gallon) of water per day while in high-altitude regions.
• Diamox (Acetazolamide): A commonly prescribed medication that can help prevent AMS by speeding up the acclimatization process. It is typically taken a day before ascending to high altitude and continued for a couple of days after. However, it should only be used under medical supervision.
• Consult a doctor: Always consult with a healthcare provider before using Diamox or other medications for altitude sickness prevention.
• Ibuprofen or paracetamol can be used for headaches that are commonly associated with AMS.
Portable oxygen: Some high-altitude regions offer access to portable oxygen bottles. While it is not generally necessary for everyone, those feeling symptoms of AMS can use oxygen to alleviate some of the discomfort.
• Pace yourself: Physical activity at high altitudes is more strenuous due to lower oxygen levels, so it’s important to avoid heavy exertion and take regular breaks.
• Rest: Take time to rest after any physical activity to allow your body to recover.
Recognizing AMS early is crucial. Common symptoms include: • Headache • Nausea/vomiting • Fatigue • Dizziness • Shortness of breath • Loss of appetite If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to take action immediately.
